Tutoring program for 1st-3rd grade kids needs volunteers

Did you know Coastside Hope is collaborating in a reading tutoring program for at-risk first through third grade students living in the Moonridge Apartments in Half Moon Bay? The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) implemented the tutoring program in conjunction with Farallone View School, where the Moonridge children attend. The program is managed by Jan Forslund.

First, second, and third grade students, most of whom are second language learners of English, are referred by their teachers to the program. Many of these children are a year or more behind in their reading proficiency.

Children meet one-on-one with tutors, many of whom are Coastside Hope volunteers. The teachers provide the reading level of each student at the time of referral, and the program provides the books and other teaching materials used by the tutors.

Tutors meet with students on Tuesday afternoons 1:40-3:00 and on Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:30 in the computer room at Moonridge. No previous teaching or tutoring experience is
required to be a tutor.
